The Towers was built in the late 1800s protecting the entrance to the Narragansett Pier Casino, which was the centerpiece of social activity among the many luxury hotels. Over the years, between fires, high winds and hurricanes, other buildings were wiped out, but the Towers remain. Considered Narragansett's good luck symbol, the Towers is now the focal point for concerts and special events. A museum occupies the first floor. Built in 1816, the Bristol County Statehouse/Courthouse was host to meetings of the Rhode Island House of Representatives and Senate until 1854. The building was then used as the seat of the Bristol County Court until the 1980s. Now in the care of the Bristol Statehouse Foundation, the restored Bristol County Statehouse preserves and celebrates the heritage of the community, state and country through exhibits, lectures and various events. The Gilbert Stuart birthplace was both the family dwelling and a place of industry, as the Stuart family operated a snuff mill. Gilbert Stuart was one of the master portrait artists of his time (the late 1700s), best known for his portrait of George Washington that has appeared on bills and postage stamps. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Babcock-Smith House was built in 1734. It boasts an interesting history. The house was first built for Dr. Joshua Babcock (the first physician in Westerly),before becoming the postmaster's residence and the Orlando Smith estate. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Witherbee School was rebuilt in 1907 after the original (1892) was destroyed by fire. This one-classroom building features a bell tower with the original school bell. Witherbee School was in operation until the 1940s, and today serves as an interpretive center on the history of education in Middletown. Marble House Another former Vanderbilt property, Marble House got its name from the 500,000 cubic feet of marble from Africa, Italy and American. Constructed between the years of 1888 and 1892, this summer cottage, as it was referred to, cost about $11 millions to build and resembled the Petit Trianon in Versailles. Boyd's Wind Grist Mill was built in 1810 and is one of the last two surviving wind mills on Aquidneck Island. The mill was originally built to grind feed for cattle, pork and poultry. The site of General Prescott's rural headquarters during the American Revolution, Prescott Farm preserves a typical Aquidneck Island farm of the 18th and 19 centuries.
